Roedean moved to its current location in Roedean Way in 1898, where it has been situated since, except 1940-1945. During those years, the school was evacuated to Cumbria and the school site was used as a Naval Torpedo training base.
Today, Roedean continues to push boundaries. For instance, Maths and Science are the most widely taken subjects in Sixth Form, with a third of Year 13s progressing to study STEM-related subjects.
Roedean has a sister school in South Africa. The two schools were founded by the Lawrence sisters less than two decades apart, and they share the strong ethos of providing a quality education for girls.
Co-Curriculum: With over 140 activities that cross year groups each week, every girl can discover something she is genuinely passionate about; whether physical, creative, thinking, or expressive, these activities underline the holistic nature of our educational provision.
Enrich the educational experience of all students, and contribute considerably to their personal development, including leadership.
Provide a range of activities to underpin a culture which supports the school’s aims.
Enhance the students’ capacity to develop interests in areas unrelated to their academic studies.
Provide the students with opportunities to engage with different individuals with shared interests across the School.
Sport: Regardless of whether your daughter’s aspirations are to represent her nation at the Olympics or to participate in sports recreationally, her experience of physical activity at Roedean will be an enjoyable, rewarding and memorable one. This is because Roedean recognises and celebrates the significant role that sport plays in the development of girls. We do this by creating a culture that leaves girls feeling empowered, confident to take part in a range of physical activities and motivated to pursue a lifetime of physical activity.

Art: Students in Years 7 to 9 become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design. In lessons, the girls gain knowledge of great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of art. Co-curricular clubs and workshops allow the girls to explore their ideas through traditional and new media.
Boarding: We understand that every family’s needs are unique. That’s why we offer flexible boarding arrangements, including full, weekly, and flexi boarding. Whether girls choose to stay with us throughout the term, return home on weekends, or board occasionally to suit family schedules, they always enjoy the same warm, supportive community and vibrant boarding experience. This flexibility allows each girl to find the perfect balance between independence, family time, and school life.
Our five boarding houses are warm, welcoming homes filled with laughter, friendship, and the unique bonds of sisterhood. In Houses 1–4, vertical boarding brings together girls from Years 7 to 12, creating a vibrant dynamic where younger students are inspired by older role models, and senior girls grow in confidence as leaders and mentors. For Year 13, Keswick House offers a distinctive experience: a close-knit final-year community where girls enjoy greater independence as they prepare for university life and the world beyond Roedean.
Pastoral Care: The very heart of boarding life at Roedean. Dedicated house staff work closely with Heads of Year, Tutors and Pastoral Managers to provide a seamless network of support. Every girl is known as an individual, with her wellbeing, personal growth, and academic success given equal priority.
